BEIJING (Reuters) – China's military buildup poses no threat to the world, Defense Minister Liang Guanglie said on Tuesday, in an e ffort to allay fears among Asian neighbors amid long-running maritime disputes. The United States, Japan and many other Southeast Asian states have frequently expressed worries about China's double-digit defense spending increases and expanding naval reach, saying Beijing's plans lack transparency. Congo M23 rebels agree to withdraw from Goma: Uganda military chief
KAMPALA (Reuters) – The leader of the M23 rebel group in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Colonel Sultani Makenga, has agreed to withdraw his forces from the eastern cities of Goma and Sake, the Ugandan military chief said on Tuesday. “We met last night and I communicated to him the decision of regional leaders reached on Saturday and he accepted to pull back his forces out of Goma and Sake and also stop any further advances southward,” Uganda’s chief of defense forces, Aronda Nyakayirima, told Reuters. …
Iranian MP decries cyber police "violations" over blogger's death
DUBAI (Reuters) – A senior Iranian MP criticized the nation’s cyber security force for “violations” in the wake of the death in police custody of a blogger, Press TV reported late on Monday. In a case that has sparked international outrage, 35-year-old Sattar Beheshti, who wrote a blog critical of the government, was arrested on October 30 after receiving death threat. He died some days later. Under increasing pressure at home and abroad, Iran’s parliament said it had formed a committee to examine the case, and the judiciary said it would deal “quickly and decisively” with those responsible. …
