Rains swell Rome's Tiber river, flooding suburbs
ROME (Reuters) – One of Rome’s most historic bridges was closed on Wednesday as the swollen Tiber River roared through the capital and flooded outlying neighborhoods. The Tiber’s muddied waters rose to fill some of the supporting arches of the Ponte Milvio, or Milvian Bridge, threatening to engulf a pedestrian walkway and submerging trees. The bridge, whose current version dates to 1850, marks the spot of a previous bridge where in 312 the emperor Constantine defeated his rival Maxentius in one of the most pivotal battles of ancient Roman history. …


Metro profit jumps, boosted by longer quarter, acquisition
(Reuters) – Metro Inc , Canada’s third-largest grocer, reported higher earnings on Wednesday as sales rose, helped by an extra week in the quarter and a recent acquisition. Metro, which competes with Loblaw Cos Ltd and Empire Co Ltd’s Sobeys, said net earnings had risen to C$145.1 million, or C$1.46 a share, in the fourth quarter ended on September 29 from C$84.4 million, or 83 Canadian cents a share, a year earlier. Hemisphere GPS to exit non-core businesses, cuts 38 percent jobs
(Reuters) – Hemisphere GPS Inc , which makes navigation systems, said it will exit its non-agriculture-related business and cut 38 percent of its total workforce. The company, which appointed Rick Heiniger chief executive in September, said it expects to save $7 million annually from the restructuring. The total workforce will be reduced from 273 to about 170. Hemisphere said diversification into marine, construction and other industries had increased costs, absorbed cash and distracted management focus from its core agriculture business. …


Hungary court gives Croatia deputy PM prison sentence
To match Interview CROATIA-ECONOMY/BUDAPEST (Reuters) – Croatia's deputy prime minister, Radimir Cacic, has been given a 22-month prison sentence by a Hungarian court for causing a fatal car crash in Hungary in 2010, a court spokesman and Cacic's lawyer told Reuters on Wednesday. In a previous ruling in June, Cacic was given a suspended 22-month prison sentence but this has now been changed and Cacic will need to start his sentence probably in 1-2 months, Attila Vadocz, spokesman for the Kaposvar court said. Cacic is also economy minister and Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic's closest ally in the centre-left cabinet. …
