CAPE TOWN, Jan 20 (Reuters) – Left-handed batsman David Miller has been named in the South African one-day squad for the second and third games of their series against New Zealand following the suspension of captain AB de Villiers. De Villiers was suspended for two games by ICC match referee David Boon for maintaining a slow over-rate during the first match which New Zealand won by one wicket. Syria opposition and backers to meet in Paris: minister
PARIS (Reuters) – Syrian opposition leaders will meet in Paris this month, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said on Sunday, decrying an “abominable” situation in which he said 100 people a day were being killed in an uprising against President Bashar al-Assad. “The situation is horrific and Bashar must go as fast as possible,” Fabius said. “There will be a meeting of the coalition in Paris in a few days, on the 28th. It’s a coalition recognized by more than 100 countries, led by extremely respectable people who simply want to restore democracy in Syria,” he said. …
Gambia's public sector to have 4-day working week
BANJUL (Reuters) – Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has decreed a four-day working week for public officials, making Friday a day of rest to allow residents in the small West African state more time for prayer and agriculture. Jammeh said in statement the decision was made in light of demand from the general public. The shorter working week will take effect from February 1. The new public sector working times in Gambia, a sliver of land stretching inland from the West African coast along the river Gambia, will be Mondays to Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. …
4 die in Egypt clashes after man killed by police
CAIRO (AP) -- Egypt’s Health Ministry says overnight clashes between police and residents of a densely populated district just north of Cairo have left four people dead.
