Ford fourth-quarter profit beats Street, widens Europe loss estimate
DETROIT (Reuters) – Ford Motor Co, the second-largest U.S. automaker, posted higher-than-expected fourth-quarter profit on the st rength of its North American operations, but predicted a wider loss in Europe due to persistent weakness in the region. Ford reported a per-share operating profit of 31 cents for the quarter, better than the average analyst estimate of 25 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Rebels storm security agency in eastern Syria: sources
BEIRUT (Reuters) – Rebels in Syria including al Qaeda-linked Islamist fighters captured a security agency in the eastern city of Deir al-Zor after days of heavy fighting, an activists' video and a pro-opposition monito ring group said on Tuesday. A video posted online showed men armed with assault rifles cheering as they stood outside a building they said was the local intelligence agency branch. Some of the fighters carried a black flag with the Islamic declaration of faith and the name of the al-Nusra Front unit, which has ties to al Qaeda in neighboring Iraq. …
Pfizer fourth-quarter results top estimates
(Reuters) – Pfizer Inc on Tuesday reported better-than-expected quarterly results, helped by a rebound in sales in emerging markets. The largest U.S. drugmaker said it earned $6.32 billion, or 86 cents per share, in the fourth quarter. That compared with $1.44 billion, or 19 cents per share, in the year- earlier quarter. LONDON (Reuters) – Britain said on Tuesday it was offering to send up to 240 troops to Mali and anglophone West African countries for training missions, as well as offering to increase logistical support to help France fight Islamist rebels in Mali. The increased logistical support may include a ferry to transport French troops and equipment to Africa, and allowing France and its allies to use Britain for air-to-air refueling. If the British offers of help are accepted, the number of British personnel deployed in Africa would rise to over 300. …

Lilly fourth-quarter profit fall as generics hurt sales
(Reuters) – Eli Lilly and Co said on Tuesday that fourth-quarter earnings had fallen as competition from generic drugs drove revenue lower. The U.S. drugmaker said it had earned $827 million, or 74 cents per share, compared with $858 million, or 77 cents per share, a year earlier. Excluding special items such as asset impairments, restructuring and other special charges, Lilly earned 85 cents per share. Analysts on average were expecting 78 cents per share. OTTAWA (Reuters) – Canada’s composite leading indicator rose 0.2 percent in December, matching the rise in the previous two months, but it showed strength across a broader range of sectors, a report by the Macdonald-Laurier Institute said on Tuesday. The financial sector remained a source of growth in December, commodity prices held steady, and the manufacturing sector rebounded slightly from November, the private think tank said.
