(Reuters) – Barrick Gold Corp , the world’s largest gold miner, reported a quarterly loss on Thursday, after booking a $3.8 billion impairment charge to write down the value of its Lumwana copper asset. The Toronto-based miner also said it has no plans to build any new mines at this time, due to the extremely challenging cost environment. However, Barrick will continue working on its massive Pascua Lama mine on the border of Argentina and Chile, with production targeted for the second half of 2014. …

Heinz Co for $72.50 a share, or $23.2 billion in cash, Heinz said on Thur sday. Including debt assumption, Heinz valued the deal at $28 billion, which it called the largest in food industry history. For Buffett, the deal represents an unusual teaming with private equity for a major acquisition. He told CNBC that 3G approached him with the idea in December and that it was "my kind of deal." He has been on the hunt for a major purchase, something worth $20 billion or more. …


Money-losing Niko says India gas price may double
(Reuters) – Oil and gas producer Niko Resources Ltd said the sale price of gas from its wells in India may nearly double, offering a ray of hope as the company reported its seventh quarterly loss in a row on Thursday. Niko said the gas price was likely to rise to between $8 and $8.50 per million British thermal units (mmBtu) based on a pricing formula recommended by an Indian government panel. The recommendation now goes to the Indian cabinet for consideration. …
